JCH is the hot-melt adhesive hose from our electrically heated range, for all kinds of hot-melt adhesive machines and PUR adhesive machines. Maximum heat resistance is up to 230 °C (446 °F), higher temperatures are custom on request, and the catalog prints seven bores from 1/4" to 1". It is a low-pressure, high-temperature line: it keeps adhesive at temperature from the melter to the point of application.

Overview

The complaint I get about hot-melt hose is rarely "it burst". It is "the first metre of every start is cold", or "the hose is soft and kinked right behind the fitting after a few months on a moving arm". Both are end-of-life symptoms, and on this line they usually trace back to how the hose was made rather than to the adhesive or the controller.

That is the reason for the change the catalog describes. Our hot-melt hoses are no longer wound by hand in the conventional way. They are wound on fully automated winding equipment, which is what gives a consistent, durable hose: the heating element, the layers and the pitch come out the same on every unit instead of depending on who was on the bench that shift. On a hose that runs inside a moving cable carrier or gets coiled and uncoiled at every colour change, that consistency is most of the service life.

The second part is even heat. The heating layer is made of uniformly braided heating elements, which minimises the differences in temperature distribution along the inner wall. A single wound element gives you a hot stripe down one side and a cooler side opposite it; braided elements even that out, so the adhesive at the wall is at a similar temperature all the way round and along the length. The insulation is a high-insulation-efficiency material chosen with surface temperature in mind, which is what you want when the hose lies against a machine frame or runs past an operator station.

Where this build is the wrong choice: it is a low-pressure line. If your machine pushes adhesive at high pressure through a small bore, or the connection is a fixed high-pressure port on an extruder or a piece of special equipment, look at the extruder or special-industry heated hose instead. This one is built to feed a melter line, not to be a pressure vessel.

Materials and construction

  • Inner tube: specified on the order form by model-code letter – B stainless corrugated tube, TB PTFE hose with stainless braid, T PTFE hose, X special material. Send the adhesive and the setpoint and we propose the tube; a PUR adhesive that cures with moisture is a different conversation from a standard hot melt.
  • Heating layer: heating elements braided uniformly around the hose, which keeps the temperature difference along the inner wall small instead of leaving a hot stripe down one side.
  • Sensor: a temperature sensor in the assembly, matched to your controller. Type J or K, Ni120, PT100 or PT1000, agreed on the drawing.
  • Insulation and cover: high-insulation-efficiency material, selected with surface temperature in mind, under the black braided outer cover shown in the photo.
  • Winding: the whole hose is wound on fully automated equipment rather than by hand, which is where the consistent layer pitch and the durable build come from.
  • End fittings: a hose-end fitting at each end, thread standard and size specified per end. The electrical lead and connector exit at one end, as in the photo.

Temperature and pressure notes

230 °C (446 °F) is the maximum heat resistance of the series; the catalog marks higher temperatures as custom, on request. The honest advice is to order the setpoint you actually run. A hose that is not working at its ceiling has margin left when the melter overshoots.

Pressure here means the per-size table, not a headline number. Working pressure runs from 173 bar at 1/4" down to 75 bar at 1", with burst pressure printed alongside each row. Read the row for the bore you are using and design the line to it. Pressure capacity falls as the adhesive temperature rises, which is general practice for any hose run hot, and a filled or abrasive adhesive is harder on the bore than a clean one.

Mechanically, keep to the 0.2 m minimum bend radius for the finished assembly. Do not twist the hose laterally during or after installation. Keep the ambient inside −40 to +55 °C (−40 to 131 °F) at 85 % relative humidity or less, and keep the surroundings free of gases that corrode metal or damage insulation, of conductive media and of severe mould; anything outside that is a custom build.

Applications

The catalog application is all kinds of hot-melt adhesive machines and PUR adhesive machines. In practice that covers:

  • Adhesive feed from a melter to a hand gun or an automatic applicator head
  • PUR lines, where the adhesive cures with moisture and a cold spot in the hose is a blockage waiting to happen
  • Moving arms and cable carriers, where the hose is flexed every cycle and the fitting area takes the load

It is not the right part for a high-pressure extrusion connection or a fixed high-pressure port; the heated high-pressure builds cover those.

How to order

A JCH part number carries the main choices, so the fastest way to order is to quote one. The catalog example is JCH-200-16-B-3X220-P2-8-N:

  1. 200 – working temperature in °C. 200 means 200 °C.
  2. 16 – inner tube bore in mm. 16 means Φ16 mm.
  3. Inner tube letter – B is a stainless corrugated tube, TB is PTFE hose with stainless braid, T is a PTFE hose, X is a special material.
  4. Supply – 220 means 220 V, 3X220 means three-phase four-wire 220 V.
  5. Sensor code – P2 is PT100 two-wire, P3 is PT100 three-wire, K is type K, J is type J, W is no sensor, T is a special sensor.
  6. Pressure – working pressure in MPa. 8 means 8 MPa.

If you do not have a part number, send these instead:

  1. Bore and length, with the number of pieces, and the bore the melter outlet takes.
  2. The adhesive: hot melt or PUR, grade or viscosity if you have it, and the setpoint.
  3. Working pressure at the hose, and the highest transient you expect.
  4. Supply voltage and the controller or melter the hose plugs into.
  5. Sensor type and wiring, if the machine dictates it, plus the pin table if one exists.
  6. End fittings at each end: thread standard, size, angle, with a photo or part number if you have one.
  7. Rated power per metre if your controller sets it, and the route – moving arm, cable carrier or fixed.

If a drawing exists, send it. We propose the specification against it, you confirm it with the quotation, and production follows the confirmed specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hot-melt adhesive hose?

An electrically heated, insulated hose that carries adhesive from a melter to the point of application while holding it at temperature. Without heat the adhesive cools and thickens in the line, and a PUR adhesive will cure in it. The build here is a heated inner hose, a braided heating layer over it, insulation, a braided outer cover and a fitting at each end with an electrical lead at one end.

What temperature does it run at?

Maximum heat resistance is up to 230 °C (446 °F), with higher temperatures custom on request. Most hot-melt lines run well below that, and the setpoint you order is what the hose and controller are built to. Give us the adhesive and the setpoint rather than the maximum.

Will it fit my adhesive machine?

It is made for hot-melt and PUR adhesive machines generally, and ends are specified separately and made to order, so the connection is matched to your machine rather than picked from a shelf. Send the thread standard and size at each end, with a photo or part number if you have one, and we will confirm the fitting.

How much pressure can I put through it?

This is a low-pressure line, and the per-size table gives the working pressure for each bore: 173 bar at 1/4", 118 bar at 1/2", 85 bar at 3/4" and 75 bar at 1", with burst pressure printed on the same row. Use the row for your bore; if your machine works at high pressure through a small bore, a heated high-pressure build is the right part.

How tight can I bend it?

The minimum bend radius for the finished assembly is 0.2 m, so a 0.4 m bend diameter. Bending tighter than the assembly limit can damage the hose or the heating layer. Plan the route on site, and support the hose so its own weight does not pull it into a tighter arc.

Can I use my existing controller?

Yes, if we know its sensor input and output type before the build. The catalog lists type J and type K thermocouples, Ni120, PT100 and PT1000 sensors, with PID control and SSR or thyristor output. Send the controller model or a photo of its label and the wiring is matched to it.

Send your hot-melt hose details

Adhesive, bore, length, setpoint, pressure, supply voltage and fittings is all we need to come back with a specification and a price.
